General Anesthetic
Some people or children become anxious in the dental office and can't relax or sit still long enough for the dentist to treat them. Still others have extensive treatment, or the need for complicated oral surgery. For these people, dental work under general anesthetic is often recommended.

General anesthetic puts them in a deep sleep. He or she is unable to feel pain or move around. This is the same kind of sleep that you would experience for any other medically necessary surgical procedure.

In our surgical facility, the general anesthetic is provided by an anesthesiologist who comes here from the hospital. Although there is some risk associated with the general anesthesia, it is safe when administered by an anesthesiologist in an appropriately equipped facility, such as ours. Many precautions are taken to provide safety for the patient during general anesthesia care. Patients are monitored closely during the procedure by personnel who are trained to manage complications.

The likelihood of any complication with general anesthesia depends on your pre-operative medical condition, the nature of your operation and the medications used. Careful disclosure of all medical conditions and family history of complications greatly diminishes the risks.
